Macroeconomics: Understanding The Wealth Of Nations, 2nd Edition

    Macroeconomics
    Wiley | 2004-09-24 | ISBN: 0470868929 | 632 pages | PDF | 3,2 MB

In explaining why certain economic events occur the authors utilise logical economic thinking and modelling but they only introduce models after the real world problem of interest has first been discussed. A distinguishing feature of this text is the focus on the data and detail of the world economy and the use of this material as an entry point into the world of theory.

Can't Take It With You: The Art of Making and Giving Money

    Can't Take It With You
    Wiley | 2004-05-03 | ISBN: 0471657638 | 240 pages | PDF | 2,2 MB

"Lewis Cullman is one of this nation’s major and most generous philanthropists. Here he combines a fascinating autobiography of a life in finance with a powerful expose´ of how the business of giving works, including some tips for all of us on how to leverage our money to enlarge our largesse."
    –Walter Cronkite

"Lewis Cullman has woven a rich and seamless fabric from the varied strands of his business, philanthropic, and personal life. Every chapter is filled with wonderful insights and amusing anecdotes that illuminate a life that has been very well lived. This book has been written with an honesty and candor that should serve as a model for others."
    –David Rockefeller

"Lewis Cullman’s memoir made me feel good. A vibrant, thoughtful, and gracious man has written a wonderful tale about living a full life and giving back a lot to society."
    –Arthur Levitt
Former Chairman, Securities and Exchange Commission

"I was so enjoyably exhausted after reading the book–I can only imagine living the life! It seems there is no good cause that Lewis has not supported, no good business opportunity that Lewis has missed, and no fun that Lewis has not had."
    –Agnes Gund
President Emerita, The Museum of Modern Art

"Now I know that venture capitalism and horse trading are almost as much fun as looking for new species in the Amazon. This book is exceptionally well written. The prose is evocative, vibrant, and inspirational."
    –Edward O. Wilson
    Professor Emeritus, Harvard University
Honorary Curator in Entomology, Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology

The Way to Trade: Discover Your Successful Trading Personality

    The Way to Trade
    Financial Times/Prentice Hall | 2000-09 | ISBN: 0273637541 | 282 pages | PDF | 1,9 MB

The author does not trust any trading method which he didn't develop himself. Traditional trading systems are under heavy criticism here:
Elliot's theory is called "garbage". Indicators are called "illusory" and "meaningless".
There is almost no discussion of how indicators work (i.e. Moving averages, MACD, Stochastics, etc.)
Rather, John Piper has developed methods based on "spiky action". That is, if the price unexpectedly jumps up,
you can expect it to go down quiclky, and you can profit from this. Or, vice-versa: if the price falls sharply, you can expect it to go up thereafter, and you can profit from this.
The format of the book is similar to Van Tharp's "Trade your way to financial freedom", but John's book is a little easier to follow. Van Tharp's main idea repeats here: "It is not the entry that counts, but rather the exit."
Alexander Elder's idea of not risking more that 2% of your capital per trade, is also mentioned here.

The Political Economy of the Asian Financial Crisis

The Political Economy of the Asian Financial Crisis
    Institute for International Economics | 2000-08 | ISBN: 0881322830 | 304 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

The Asian crisis has sparked a thoroughgoing reappraisal of current international financial norms, the policy prescriptions of the International Monetary Fund, and the adequacy of the existing financial architecture. To draw proper policy conclusions from the crisis, however, it is necessary to understand its domestic politics. In this study, political scientist Stephan Haggard focuses on the most seriously affected countries-Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand-while also drawing lessons from those economies, such as Taiwan, that escaped the most severe distress.

Haggard focuses on the political economy of the crisis, emphasizing the longer-run problems of moral hazard and corruption, the politics of crisis management and the political consequences of severe economic downturn. Looking forward, he focuses on two critical policy issues: changes in social safety nets in the crisis countries and efforts at corporate and financial restructuring.

Private Equity as an Asset Class

Guy Fraser-Sampson “Private Equity as an Asset Class"
    Wiley | 2007-04-16 | ISBN: 0470066458 | 284 pages | PDF | 1,6 MB

Guy Fraser-Sampson draws upon twenty years' private equity experience to provide a practical guide to mastering the intricacies of this highly specialist asset class. Aimed equally at investors, professionals and business school students, it starts with such fundamental questions as "what is private equity?" and progresses to detailed analysis of venture and buyout returns. It also unveils a totally new concept which looks set to revolutionise thinking in the industry: Total Return investing.
Often unfairly reviled, and frequently misunderstood, private equity differs from all other asset classes in various important respects, not least in the nature and timing of its returns, which require a whole new approach for those reared on more traditional investments such as bonds and shares. This book shows how a good grasp of the basic structure of private equity vehicles and returns (including the dreaded J-curve) can lead to full understanding of the techniques needed to measure and analyse performance.
    Key points include:
A glossary of private equity terms
    Venture funds and transactions
    Buyout funds and transactions
    Understanding private equity returns
    Analysis of historic returns
How to plan a fund investment programme
How to conduct effective due diligence
    Total Return investing

The Profit Magic of Stock Transaction Timing

The Profit Magic of Stock Transaction Timing
    Traders Press | 2000-03-01 | ISBN: 0934380627 | 223 pages | PDF | 6,8 MB

Can a $10,000 investment yield $1,000,000 in a year? In five years? If so, what is the risk involved? These are the kinds of questions to which this work is addressed. Such fantastic results are possible in the stock market. Individual issues fluctuate widely enough and often enough to permit this and more. Techniques are presented here that put an average yield on invested capital of 10% per month, well within the realm of possibility. Compounding profits at this rate, such a yield can return $1,000,000 on a $10,000 investment within 50 months.

An actual trading experiment will be described using these principles which produced an 8.9% yield per transaction--every 9.7 days. Such a yield, if continued, compounds $10,000 to $1,000,000 in 15 months. If such results can be attained in the market -- why isn't everyone doing it?

The answer is complex, but the elements are simple: effort, knowledge and psychological barriers. Any goal this worthwhile requires time and effort. Most investors, amateur and professional do not have the kind of analytical background needed to shear through rumor, opinion, and adage to get at the basis of why stock prices change. And finally, even with knowledge in hand, many investors lack training in the emotion-logic balance required for success.

Nevertheless, all of these obstacles can be overcome. It is the purpose of this book to provide you with the essentials. The results are yours if you care to apply yourself with sufficient intensity. Investment operations will be presented here in a deliberately unorthodox manner. We will turn our backs firmly on all cliches, adages, and market lore that will not withstand critical scrutiny. Where necessary, we will not hesitate to form new ones that do fit the facts.

You will find here that the big money in investing stems from the principle of "profit compounding:---of short-term trades. It is further shown that this potential cannot be exploited in an optimum manner without a large improvement in transaction-timing capability that cannot be achieved using tradional investment methods.

You will be exposed to: a concept of profit maximization; a model of stock price motion with prediction implications; an explanation of why chart patterns form---and how to use this knowledge to your profit; step-by-step methods for using the price-motion model to generate definite "wait," "buy," "hold," "sell," "sell short," "cover short," and "protect profit" signals; an explanation of why moving averages work and how to design your own for use in transaction timing; a complete trading method: how to select issues, how to analyze them for action signals, and how to improve your chances of turning and keeping a profit; the extent to which you should be concerned by chance factors, whether or not you should sell in case of war or financial crisis; the reasons why psychological considerations can affect your profits and what you can do about it; an introduction to numerical analysis and spectral analysis, upon which the results on the book are based.

The problems of trading techniques and methods are dealt with directly. Enough methods and references are included to permit further research if desired.

    Trading Systems and Methods

    Trading Systems and Methods
    Wiley | 1998-11-16 | ISBN: 0471148792 | 720 pages | PDF | 32,4 MB

For more than two decades, futures traders have turned to the classic Trading Systems and Methods for complete information about the latest, most successful indicators, programs, algorithms, and systems. Perry Kaufman, a leading futures expert highly respected for his years of experience in research and trading, has thoroughly rewritten and updated his bestselling guide, which remains the most comprehensive and instructional book on trading systems today. This detailed, hands-on manual offers a thorough analysis, using a systematic approach and explanation of each method of calculation or operation.

This book exposes the reader to many concepts necessary to stay in the trading game. The information is well organized and presented well. It can be "a read" but would be better pursued as a study. That means thinking through the formulas presented, getting a grip on statistics and its interpretations (all in the book).
This is a book useful for system trading (which I do) and might even have an idea or two for the discretionary trader. To point an accusatory "what stupid book" finger at Kaufman for pointing out not so readily accepted ideas (i.e. moon phase, etc.) is plain silly. There are some obsolete parts, like old computer code, but the remaining 600 pages are great.
